Buying a used car without nasty surprises – that sounds easier than it is. This checklist shows what to look out for before, during and after the viewing.

Before the viewing

Analyse the listing: Read the listing text carefully. Do phrases like “wie gesehen” (as seen), “Bastlerfahrzeug” (project car) or “km laut Vorbesitzer” (mileage according to previous owner) appear? InseratCheck detects such warning signs automatically.

Check the vehicle history: Ask for the VIN (vehicle identification number). It lets you trace the vehicle’s history and make enquiries at workshops.

Know the market price: Compare the asking price with similar vehicles. An unusually low price is often not a bargain – but a sign of problems.

During the viewing

Bodywork: Gaps between doors, wings and bonnet should be even. Uneven gaps indicate accident repairs.

Underbody and wheel arches: Rust, weld seams or fresh underbody coating can hide damage. Best to have it inspected on a lift.

Service book: Complete and without gaps? A missing or incomplete service record is always a minus point.

Test drive: At least 20 minutes, at different speeds. Pay attention to vibrations and noises when braking, shifting and steering.

After the viewing

Check the purchase contract: Put all of the seller’s verbal promises in writing in the contract. Having “accident-free” and “no rust” in writing makes a difference.
